Getting to Know the Thai Culture

Thailand, commonly known as "The Land of Smiles," is a land of traditions with warm and welcoming people. One of the most important influences on Thai culture is Buddhism, with many beliefs and traditions stemming directly from Buddhist principles. Two of the most important values in Thailand are respect, especially for elders, and self-control.

Thailand is a lovely combination of traditional influences and contemporary attitudes, especially in Bangkok. You can shop in one of the biggest malls in Asia, CentralWorld, and then, across the street, visit the Erawan Shrine, which houses a statue of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation.

Thai Culture & Traditions

  • Thais are a proud nation with a long history and a complex hierarchical structure of status.

  • They are conservative and expect visitors to dress appropriately in formal public places.

  • Thais read more into your body language and approach than your tone of voice.

  • They are incredibly patient and forgiving and are happy to accept things as they are.

  • The culture of Thailand is heavily influenced by Buddhism.

  • Thais use their first names and usually do not use their family names. For example, students will address our Head of School, Mr. Barry Sutherland, as Mr. Barry.

  • Although you can mostly get by with English around Bangkok, you may need to learn some Thai phrases.

  • Thai people love it when you speak even a little of their language. A little effort goes a long way.
